School Story

My years at Lafayette primarily centered around time with the band....the great Marching Generals! I played clarinet in the marching band- and lead my own rank of clarinets -played base clarinet in the orchestra and alto saxophone twice for the jazz band. This opened a wide world for the love of all kinds of music that I carry with me today...after all these years! Our band director Walter Hall was a strong, encouraging leader to do our very best for our school and state of Kentucky. I have many fun and fond memories of football game half-time shows, practice sessions, parades, and winning competitions in music. And, …..
My love for drawing and painting began at Big Picadome in the 4th grade but bloomed at Lafayette Senior. The Senior Prom theme wall painting was designed and painted by me and other Lafayette classmate artists. I now paint in watercolor of places Larry and I have traveled ..... sort of a watercolor travel log! It is a dream of mine since the 10th grade at Lafayette. LIFE IS GOOD!

I was honored in my junior year when voted to be a class officer serving as your Treasurer. Our classmates are the best ever! Bright, fun and caring for each other. They provided me with the encouragement I needed during a special time of my life.

My dad became a stroke patient when I was young, while my mom was a math teacher at Lafayette and supporting three young girls. My years in Lexington were wonderful...where I learned to have a huge love of life and love of friends. Lafayette provided the smart, talented teachers that challenged and supported my advanced placement classes and my A- average... which lead to a love of learning that is priceless and continues to this day.

I look forward to sharing stories with my classmates about our history together that started in the fall of 1958 at Lafayette Junior and celebrated Lafayette Senior graduation in June 1964!...a time for KY basketball, Vietnam War, year books, JFK, Senior Prom, Beatles, Perry Como, Snow White contestant and parade, Joyland, sock hops, Shoney's, Lake Herrington, desegregation, fin tail cars, Keeneland races, Simon & Garfunkel, angora wrapped rings, senior rings, the Red Mile...etc., I have slept since then!...really enjoyed my walk down memory lane with everyone at our 50th class reunion in 2014!...the 55th in 2019!...and our 60th reunion in 2024...see you there!

Van, I am so sad to hear about friendly, beautiful Linda. I always look forward to talking with you both at each class reunion. She and I shared many horse stories through the years. I was so happy when you and she agreed to meet me and my horseback riding friend during the World Equestrian Games for dinner at Malone's. Sharing Facebook with her has been sweet and entertaining with your family's horseshows and adventures. Your family has such wonderful memories of better times with her. I pray that remembering those times will give you, your children and grandchildren some peace and strength through these difficult days. Hugs and friendship always.
