Hey Nancy

I, too, went to Little Picadome for first grade and Big Picadome for second grade, then to Clays Mill School. Mrs. Lorraine  Trosper was my first grade teacher and she is now residing at Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles where my mother is. (Small world!) I've had several nice visits with her daughter Lina Jean. Who were your teachers?  Wonder who else went to the Picadome schools? Looking forward to seeing you and everyone at our reunion! Linda, I didn't realize that you were in Mrs. Trosper's class, too. She gave us a great start in first grade. I used to see her from time to time in Lexington, and I'm glad to know where she is living. My sons live in Versailles. I'm looking forward to Saturday!

I was in second grade in Big Picadome, third and fifth grades in the quonset hut classrooms there, but was bussed to Clays Mill for 4th and ended up at Glendover for sixth grade.  All without moving from our house. Nancy, we were in Girl Scouts together, at least for a time, and our troop met at Hunter Presbyterian Church.

I also went to "The Picadomes" then onto Claysmill for 5th grade.  For 6th grade I had to walk 1/6 of a mile on Claysmill Road, which had no sidewalks, to get to Claysmill School so I could get on a bus to be taken to Glendover while it was still inder construction. I went to Sayre for 7th grade and then to Layfayette.  I went back to Sayre for my last year which is why I'm not found a list of 1964 graduates.

I suspect most people won't remember me because I was so shy..not to say I wasn't mischeivious. When "challenged" in band I would just give up my chair rather than play in front of people solo.  I would rather have sat in the parking lot than to defend my chair.

I have has been a RN for 34 years and still am working.  I live in Owenton, Ky...I think our graduating class has more people in it than live in the city limits.  I have worked in hospitals in Frankfort, Lexington, No. Ky and Cincinnati. I work here now because it is small, close and I am old.

My 2 daughters and their familes live within 5 miles of me. 2 teachers, a chief of police, a social worker,  a VP at a rural electric company, an elemenatry student, a college student on a basketball schlorship and a high school student.  Life is good.

To all the Picadome students--I had Helen Gregory for first and second grade, then went to Clays Mill and Mrs. Taviin for 3rd.  Was a great experience in both schools.  Liked Picadome so much, that I did my student teaching for elementary music at Big and Little Picadome, then Henry Clay for junior/senior high music.  Should we have a gathering of all the Picadome students who went all over Fayette Co. afterwards?.

Another Big Picadome student with some memories----I had Mrs. Gregory for first and second grade, Mrs. Whitmer for third, Mrs. Radcliff for fourth, I think Mrs. Teague for fifth and cannot remember the sixth grade teacher.  I do remember the sixth grade was when all the "yankees" moved into our classes--the IBM group started in force about then--1958?  Since I lived on Woodbine, halfway between Big Picadome and Lafayette Jr. and Sr. High, I walked to school all twelve years--and yes, it was uphill both ways!  Mrs. Dixon was the seventh grade teacher--I remember her as "weight challenged" and not very likeable--maybe I was the same at that time...The Junior High teachers that I remember best were Mr. Fife and Mr. Moore.  Both taught history which ended up being one of my three college majors.  I remember Mr. Moore telling a student to throw Billie Buckley's shoes out the window during one class--who knows why.  The teacher who probably had the most impact on me was Mrs. Hannau (sp.)--she was either a ninth or tenth grade English teacher who taught her "statement-pie" method of writing.  Senior High?--maybe another time.

I went to Little Picadome, for !st. &  2nd. grades, in the white building behind the main school. Had Mrs. Holbrook both years. Then on to the big time @ Big Picadome, where I was a crossing guard in  5th & 6th grades. I remember one of the criteria for the position was you had to walk to school. The next six years were at Lafayette Jr. & Sr.

I also went to Big Picadome 5th and 6th grades, after moving to Celia Lane in Gardenside.  Went to Kenwick for 1st through 4th grades--did anyone else go to Kenwick?  Ms. Pence was my 5th grade teacher at Picadome, and can you ever forget Ms. Pence's theatrical production of "Cinderella?"  If I remember correctly, Ernie Begley was the prince and Lana Lunsford was Cinderella.  Speaking of theatre, does anyone remember my 8th grade teacher at Lafayette Jr. High, Mr. Weddle's, class production of "Now he belongs to the Ages?"   Everyone's memories of junior and senior English classes at Lafayette Sr. were dear to my heart, as I, too, had the privilege (not my sense at the time) of being taught by Ms. Butler for senior English.  The hard work I did in her class has come home many times for me in my life's work, not to mention the superior training I received in Lafayette's Business Department.  Ms. Heaton was my junior English teacher during the "afternoon" session.  I remember our class was so fun and "To Kill a Mockingbird" was my favorite reading assignment.

I didn't realize so many of the students I graduated with, I started school with at Little Picadome. I had Mrs. Robertson for First grade. I can't remember name of second grade teacher, but I remember it was first room on right as you walked in the front door. We could see the school buses pull up outside when it was time for school to be over for the day. Remember when we would get our immunization shots by the health dept in the cafertia/basement. I always remember little Bobby Adams always had to go first because we lined up in alphabetical order.

I started at Lil' Picadome with Mrs. McKinney, 2-3 grade at Big Picadome, 4th at Clays Mill, 5th back to Big Picadome and 6th at Glendover!  What is interesting....I NEVER MOVED.... Lived in the same house all 6 years.

I also went to Little Picadome in 1st and 2nd grades in the little house behind the bigger brick building. I remember going to lunch in the basement of bigger building. Going now the steps I remember how good the food would smell. I guess I was hungry.
Remember when Little Picadome burned. My younger sister was there when it happened. I was in 4th grade at Big Picadome at the time. Scared all the parents nearly to death. My Mom and other neighbors ran all the way to Little Picadome to 'rescue' their children if needed. When she got there, all the students were standing out side in the class groups and everyone was safe. A scary time.

I went to Jefferson Davis for kindergarden, and 1st grade, Big Picadome for the 2nd grade, Clays Mill for the 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade and then walked to Clays Mill and bused to Glendover for the 6th grade. I attended Lafayette Jr. and Sr. I do remember having bomb scares and everyone went home as the school was evacuated for that day in junior high. Telling people that I went to double session in my junior year and went in the afternoon was strange to them today. Being in the Lafayette Band we had practice with the last hour of the morning session and the first hour of the afternoon session. The day of JFK asssissation Mike Cox, his mother, Steve Monroe and I drove to Caldwell Co. in Mike's 1959 Red Chevrolet Convertible. Mrs. Cox would not allow us 3 to go to Caldwell Co. by ourselves. We all went bowling that afternoon before the game started and we played our instruments as some of us went to the game as the whole band did not attend the game.

Dean how did you get to go to Glendover for 6th? We lived on Maplewood at that time and I was stuck with a nasty teacher named Miss Salyer who hated kids, would deliberately pit one against another and would point out minor failures to everyone. Funny the things we remember after all these years. After 6th grade we moved to Chevy Chase and I attended Morton for jr high but when it came time for high school our street was listed as county howevert was close enough to HC for me to have a choice. I chose Lafayette.

Ellen, I didn't remember you were in Mrs Trosper's room, either!  And several in our class went to the Picadomes! I remember our room was in the basement and we walked upstairs to eat. On the other side of the stairwell wall was the janitors room. There was a hole in the wall and we'd try to look through it to see if he was there. He stuffed a rag in the hole to keep us from eyeing him. Then we'd go by and give his rag a poke trying to push it out! If we did, he'd stuff it with another rag. We were all about half scared of him. Why, I don't remember. I had Miss Thompson for 2nd grade and she swatted me on the legs one day for talking. I was sooo embarassed.(But have kept on talking all these years!)  Ann Nell Jones  and I were good friends, and we had the same middle name. Did anyone have Mrs Allison in 4th grade at Clays Mill School?  Mrs Wallace for 5th grade? and Mr V.L. Harris for 6th grade? I've really enjoyed reading everyone's memories and stories. Can we keep this up after the reunion?

Susan: I went to Kenwick, then Yates, before moving to the South side of town in time to attend 5th at Porter Memorial, 6th at Glendover and the rest at Lafayette.  When I attended class at Porter Memorial Church I walked home with a small group of neighbors; Patsy McDaniel, David Monroe and others, sometimes stopping at Kelly's for an ice cream or Hales Pharmacy (Hi Phyllis) for either cinnamon balls or lemon drops. Those were the days!

I think it was the 10th grade I was sellin candy and gum etc. n the mornin and lunch. I was sellin so much the kids were spendin their lunch money with me so It hurt thr income of the cafteria and the school shut me down.

I agree Sid, the sixth grade at Glendover stands put in my mind.  I was in Mrs.Sims class also and it seemed like we learned different dances all year long. i came to Big Picadome in the last part of the first grade from Cassidy, was in the quonset huts out back ,then to Porter Memorial for the 5th grade  and then Lafayette for 7-12th grades. Great memories-doesn't seem possible it's been 50 years-I certainly don't feel that I'm the age I am. I'm sure alot of people feel the same way too.

Hi Yolanda, thanks for the memories of 5th grade at Porter Church. That was a little weird attending school in a church basement (especially since that was the church I regularly attended) but we made the most of it.  We always seemed to be the class they were trying to figure out what to do with because we were so large - quonset huts, church basements, double sessions! Anyone remember how many classes were at Porter?  I was in Mrs. Jones class.  We were all super excited when Glendover opened the next year.

One memory I had at Lil Picadome was when they filled in that huge dip in the play yard.  We were excited about all the equipment & the teacher let us go to the windows.  I was mortified when she lifted me up so I could see!  I'm still short but don't think anyone has lifted me up since then to see something.

Linda, I was in Miss Thompson's second grade, too, but I couldn't remember her name until you mentioned her! She was nothing like Mrs. Trosper, and I was at least a little afraid of her. I believe that misbehaving classmates were sometimes sent to the "cloak room" which was like a large closet for our coats and for supplies. Susan, I was in Mr. Weddle's class, too, and had a part in the play about Abraham Lincoln. Doug Stephan was President Lincoln. I liked Mr. W, who had served in the "Korean Conflict" prior to being our teacher. (He displayed photos taken after combat.) We had a party at his home, I believe. Back then, teachers were allowed to use a paddle on students, so he and the female teacher next door teamed up on meting out punishment: he paddled boys, and she paddled girls, although I can't imagine that actually happening. Guess it did. Our class was full of "active kids" that year. The boys used to remove the teacher's spray cologne from his desk and spray it on one of our classmates who didn't use deodorant. How miserable that must have been for him, but it was also miserable for us to be near him.

If this post is repetitive, please excuse, since it appears I'm having internet connection problems.  Anyway, Yolanda, so glad to know you were a fellow Kenwick student.  The two teachers I especially remember were Ms. Shindlebauer (sp) for the 2nd grade, who taught us well how to write script, and Ms. Roberts for the 4th, who sent a group of us to "conservation camp" in the summer.  Ellen, thanks for remembering the Abraham Lincoln play in Mr. Weddle's class.  I now remember you in the play, as well as Doug Stephens, and what a big project it was for us that year.  I, too, remember Mr. Weddle fondly and with respect, the "active" students in our class, that long paddle with holes and flashbacks of it being put to use in the front of the room!  Yes, things have sure changed.  Well, today is the big day of our 50th reunion, and it is such a special day for memories by all of us!  It has all become so vivid to me since I joined the website.  Although I will not be there tonight in person (planning a visit to Lexington in a month or so), I will be there in thought and spirit from here in Phoenix and wish all who attend the very best of fun and comraderie and look forward to seeing the reunion pictures!

Yes, Holly...I remember we had a choice of Henry Clay or Lafayette.  I also remember your father advising us that he thought Lafayette the better school....so that's what we chose.  It was a good choice for me.  I had been at Cassidy since first grade and then Morton for all three years....

What a Fabulous 50th reunion!!!!  The Committee and volunteers did an awesome job over these past months to  make this the best ever GATHERING ....we had time for everything...catching up with old friends, fine dining, catching up with more old friends, dancing to the oldies, catching up with more old friends and a great group picture of everyone attending...photographer took two group pictures and combined them into one great photo!!!!  Now if someone would volunteer to label the people in the photo.(.first row left to right) would be great!!!  Certainly enjoyed the evening visiting with a record number of 64 graduates and look forward to the 55th and beyond...thanks again to all the people responsible.. for their extensive time, talent and dedication to making last night such a HUGE success...
